10 Rock Musicians With Surprising Day Jobs

8. Russell Senior (Pulp) – Antiques Dealer

Another member of the Britpop movement, Russell Senior provided guitar, violin and vocals to the musical soundscape that made up Pulp.

Although Senior hasn't been a consistent member of Pulp for many years now, he's still appeared with the band on a number of occasions.

He became disenfranchised with Pulp when he felt the reality of their lives didn't fit with the kind of music they were putting. One of Pulps most popular tracks Common People was written as a scathing satire of the privileged and upper class members of society who enjoy enjoyed "slumming it". The lyrics ridiculed those who appropriate lower class sensibilities to appear more grounded, but Senior felt this was disingenuous.

The fact of the matter was at this point in their career the members of Pulp were hugely successfully and living the high life. It was a matter of having their cake and eating it too, claiming to speak for the everyday person but not living like them.

It all encouraged Senior to leave the band in 1997 and pursue other musical ventures, resigning himself to be the man behind the mixing desk rather than in front of an audience. Beside this, however, he also has a keen interest in antiques, specialising in the dealing of fine glass wear.

Before engrossing myself in the written word, I spent several years in the TV and film industry. During this time I became proficient at picking things up, moving things and putting things down again.
