10 Rock Musicians With Surprising Day Jobs
7. Dan Spitz (Anthrax) – Bespoke Watchmaker
On the surface having a penchant for watchmaking might be the last thing you would expect from the original thrash metal guitarist Dan Spitz.
But when you think about it, the nimble fingers of a metal guitarist probably lend themselves fairly well to the tedious and delicate process of assembling and resorting fine clockwork. It's a discipline that requires an awful lot of patience and control. The tactile nature of such work seems like a fitting way to keep those fingers active when they're not churning out face melting guitar solos.
Spitz has done two separate stints in Anthrax since he joined in 1983, taking a 10 year hiatus to pursue his other love.
Since 1995, Spitz has dedicated hours upon hours to his craft. He studied avant-garde watchmaking at a prestigious Swedish school, which only accepted six new students every three years at the time he applied... , pretty exclusive. He comes from a watchmaking lineage, though, and from a young age would tinker around in his grandfathers watch repair store.
Spitz's watches sell from $50,000 up to a few million. Not a bad way to subsidise your music income...
