10 Most Rock N' Roll Things That Have Ever Happened
6. Metallica Play A Concert In Antarctica
When you've been in a multi-million selling band for the better part of 30 years you've pretty much played everywhere; every populated continent, near enough every country and you'll have racked up enough air miles to plot a course to Mars and back. But if you really want to play somewhere new, where do you go? Well in Metallica's case, they went where no band has played before, and likely where no musical instrument has ever been played at all; Antarctica. In December 2013 the band took themselves, 120 scientists and competition winners on a once in a lifetime experience to see them play live in a tiny dome atop a helipad at the Argentine Antarctic base, Carlini. But wait, it gets weirder. Antarctica has a fragile eco-system and there are rules and regulations in place to prevent the damage and destruction of the local flora and fauna. To minimise the potential for any damage to local wildlife and their habitats, the band were prevented from bringing any amplification with them. Instead, they used amp simulators and everyone was given headphones so they could hear what was being played. Does anyone else see the irony in one of the loudest bands in the world playing a silent gig? And what would it look like to a causal observer? Like the world's heaviest silent disco. Either way, the hour long set has guaranteed that Metallica are the first band to have played on all seven continent, adding another page to the history books with their name at the top. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hi2u98VKxc
