10 Rock Songs That Insulted Other Musicians

2. Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac

Any other band that went into an album with the same baggage as Fleetwood Mac probably couldn’t survive. After drafting in Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks for their previous record, the new album started off terribly, with Lindsey and Stevie breaking up and John and Christine McVie separating as the album sessions were still going on. They may have kept it as professional as they could in the studio, but when your heart’s been broken, it’s going to show up in your writing.

Although Stevie seemed to take the dignified approach on the song Dreams by wishing Lindsey some kind of peace, Lindsey wasn’t as kind on Go Your Own Way, almost framing it as if their breakup was all her fault. In every single verse, there are all these subtle hidden jabs at Stevie for one reason or another, from Lindsey wanting to give her the world and her refusing it, to suggesting that all she wants to do is shack up with other men. The lyrics ended up being so savage in the original demo that Lindsey originally decided not to show the band the lyrics because of how detailed they were about their breakup.

Even so, the lyrics that we have are still pretty bad, painting Lindsey as the kind of jilted lover that is turning a lot more toxic as the relationship comes to an end. For a lyric sheet this ugly though, the song is absolute pop heaven, having every single hook Lindsey can think of in one fantastic little song. Then again, having one of your biggest hits be about what a horrible girlfriend you were probably didn’t do Stevie any favors either.
