10 Rock Songs That Insulted Other Musicians
3. Mechanix - Megadeth
When Metallica started to take off on the strength of Kill Em All, Dave Mustaine had a legitimate right to be upset. Since the entire band had been known to enjoy more than a few drinks, being called out as the drunkard of the group and being sent back home to California was bound to do some damage to your ego. Dave was angry, and his first album put out under the Megadeth name had all of the spite jammed into just one song.
Although Metallica had used some of Dave’s ideas without asking him, Killing is My Business is Dave through and through, coming up with even better riffs on songs like the title track. The Mechanix had always been his song though, and Metallica’s reworking of it into The Four Horsemen wasn’t going to stop him from recording it anyway. Compared to the Metallica version that most people knew, The Megadeth version of the track sounds like it’s being played at three times its original speed, with Dave trying to outdo Metallica however he can.
Dave still had some time before turning into the singer that we know today though, and you can practically hear him racing along in the song, almost fumbling over his words as he tries to hammer out some of the most high energy metal that he can. Megadeth were still thrash at this point, but this a new stripe than what he had gotten into with Metallica. It may have been the same song, but this is what The Four Horsemen would sound like if it were hammered out by a punk band.
