10 Rock Songs That Left Us All Hanging

7. Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan

Some of the best love songs tend to be brought out of great pain. Even when you hear someone like Bob Dylan talking about love, you can always hear a slight bit of cynicism in his voice, as if he knows it’s not going to last or having his guard up in case he gets hurt later. When that pain eventually came, Tangled Up In Blue took years to spring to life, and even then the story wasn’t finished.

Which is saying something because there’s a ton of writing here, as Dylan spends almost every other verse painting different scenes from his love life playing out, from meeting her as a stranger and getting her out of a bind to becoming lovers and then returning to strangers again later down the line. As Dylan finds himself in a bohemian setting later in the song with revolution in the air, he starts to realize that he may have left behind his other half, and he starts off the last verse rolling to another joint, hoping to get back to her somehow.

He might not recognize the people that they met back then, but he needs to find some way to see her face at least one more time. We never get the payoff though, as the harmonica plays us off as he hits the road and tries to pick up the pieces of where he went wrong. He can document what happened along the way, but time waits for no one, so you might as well start walking.
