10 Rock Songs That Took Shots At Other Artists

5. Glorified G - Pearl Jam

The start of the '90s began to give way to a new breed of rock star. Outside of the glam style rock bands that were clogging up MTV at the time, the rise of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam gave us a look at a new form of what a frontman could be, being much more sensitive to the limelight than most of the other masculine presences like James Hetfield. So when your drummer doesn't really feel the same way as you, it's much better to write a song about it than resorting to violence.

Throughout most of Vs., you can hear Pearl Jam trying to get the more metallic side of their sound onto the tape, including Glorified G, which sounds like a pastiche of what gun culture looks like. Though there are definitely some people that are this way inclined in America, Eddie Vedder actually got the idea for this song when he learned that drummer Dave Abruzzesse had just purchased a firearm, to which the drummer quickly explained were glorified pellet guns.

Looking to let out his passive aggressive attitude, Glorified G is a send up to all of the men who buy guns just to have some sort of power trip, using religion as their justification to carry a gun and feeling so manly when they have that firearm in their hands. While this song remained a classic in Pearl Jam's catalog, the relationship with the drummer did not, with Dave leaving in just a few years and leaving the drum stool open for Jack Irons for the next handful of records.
