10 Rock Songs That Took Shots At Other Artists
2. How Do You Sleep - John Lennon
For all of the happiness that the Beatles gave us during their tenure, it was absolutely heartbreaking to see how their final days played out. In the wake of their manager Brian Epstein passing away, the Fab Four were never really able to get their business ideas off the ground, leading to them bringing in Allen Klein and turning the final years of their activity into the same realm as tabloid drama. By the time that Paul McCartney was releasing his first solo album though, his former writing partner wasn't exactly ready to make nice when he stepped up.
After cleansing his inner demons on Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon's second album Imagine took a look at the rest of the hangups going on in his world, including How Do You Sleep being nothing but a diss track towards Macca. Seeing how John was still working with Allen Klein around this time, these jabs are more than a little bit hurtful towards Paul's peppy spirit, saying that the only thing he did that was worthwhile was the song Yesterday and how every single track that he puts out is the equivalent of muzak to Lennon's ears.
While Paul was justifiably upset that John would have gone this far, both men seemed to take it in stride, with John later wishing that he had been more self referential with the song and Paul eventually writing Dear Friend with Wings to extend an olive branch for their broken friendship. Though this would still be a touchy subject for the next few years, both Lennon and McCartney were able to patch things up and rekindle their friendship a few years before Lennon passed away in 1980.
