10 Rock Songs That Were A Nightmare To Make
5. Baby I Love You - The Ramones
For any serious music fan, the idea of the Ramones making a record with Phil Spector makes almost too much sense. Given that most of these New York punks' early songs were nothing but high energy versions of old pop tunes, why not bring in the guy who made those songs so special back in the '60s? Well, there's what works good on paper, and then there's the mayhem that went into End of the Century.
Aside from every member calling Spector a dictator in the studio, the entire production came to a head when they went to record the classic Ronettes song Baby I Love You. Depending on who's story you believe, Spector was known to hold the band at gunpoint until they finally got the results he wanted, going so far as to hear them do just the basic snare hit of the song over and over again.
Actually pulling off the cover proved to be the biggest chore of the record, as Dee Dee recalled Spector keeping his firearm at arm's length even when showing the band the basic arrangement of the track. Adding insult to injury, what was supposed to be the Ramones' big breakout only managed to find its way onto the charts before trailing off. Whereas most collaborations almost seem destined to happen, this is a legendary team-up that both sides have seemed to wash their hands of.
