10 Rock Songs That Were A Nightmare To Make

2. Something in the Way - Nirvana

Most of the importance surrounding Nirvana's Nevermind has been burrowed into the ground long enough ever since its release in 1991. Coming like a bolt of lightning, these handful of tracks from Kurt Cobain managed to set the alternative rock scene in motion single-handedly, wiping out the more cynical sides of hair metal. Though most of the tracks were done fairly quickly, Something in the Way needed the most delicate care.

Considering how low and quiet the song is meant to be taken, Kurt found it really difficult trying to make things work in the live recording space. After numerous takes of not getting it right, he sat on the couch in the control room and started to play it the way it should sound. Realizing the kind of performance he had on his hands, Butch Vig quickly unplugged all of the fans in the room and recorded Kurt right there on the couch, which became the basis for the rest of the track.

That proved to be just the beginning though, with Kurt's weird 5 string guitar not really fitting in tune with Krist Novoselic's bass or the cellist that was brought in. Even when laying down the basic drum tracks, Dave Grohl would punch in every hit to make sure it was as understated as possible. While the song itself is pretty simple when you look at it closely, the amount of craftsmanship at work here shows that Nirvana were so much more than just your average rock act.
