10 Rock Songs That Were Written As A Joke

8. Song 2 - Blur

Around the same time that Britpop was entering the conversation, we also had to worry about the downfall of grunge. You couldn’t ask for two different versions of rock either, with Britpop being defined by bright and sunny melodies as opposed to the sludge that was coming out of Seattle. The two practically felt like polar opposites and Blur gave themselves a second life making their own version of the grunge sound.

Though Britpop was already taking off in the UK, not too many of them ended up seeing the same success across the pond, with most people in the States being focused on the pop punk and post grunge that was coming out in the wake of grunge. In an attempt to beat them at their own game, Damon Albarn crafted this song specifically to cater to the American audience, with the whole song centered around one guitar riff and lyrics that are either disaffected or don’t make any sense at all depending on what part of the song you’re in.

There are even a few trademarks that make this fit into the grunge aesthetic, from the meaty power chords to the layers of fuzz that are on the bass guitar. The song title is even a bit of a joke, only being called that because it was the second song on the record and the fact that it lasts for a total of 2:02. It may have been constructed as a bit of a goofy aside for the record, but there were millions of Americans singing along to that “woohoo” chorus who were none the wiser.
