10 Rock Songs That Were Written As An Apology

5. So Sad About Us - The Who

As rock got more comfortable on the charts in the late '60s, fans were growing used to a genre known as power pop. While the Beatles and the Stones still had their roots in rock and roll and the blues respectively, there was also a style of music that seemed to take the same crunch of rock and brought traditional pop hooks into the mix as well. The Beatles may have laid the groundwork for the pop star rock and roller, but the skeleton of what power pop sounds like could have been trademarked by the Who.

In the same vein as many power pop bands that would come before, So Sad About Us is one of the more underrated cuts that Pete Townshend would ever write, taking a simple chord progression while talking about a relationship that has reached its bitter end stage. Since this was just coming off My Generation, this was a breath of fresh air, having a sing along chorus where you can practically feel Roger Daltrey's emotion dripping out of his voice, as he watches his girlfriend walk out of his life.

You could make the argument that a song like this plays as a little bit naive these days because of how bare bones the apology is, but that was the whole point behind power pop in the early stages. You didn't need a bunch of complex chords and volume to get your point across. You just needed a lot of heart, and you can feel the angst in every other chord here.
