10 Rock Songs That Were Written By Accident
7. Nothin Song - Alice in Chains
When you’ve been in the studio for a long time, there comes a point where you’re going to start going a little crazy, and Alice in Chains were at their wit’s end. During the recording of their self titled record, Layne Staley was clearly not doing well, getting more and more into his heroin habit and not finding time to write or even show up to half of the sessions. They needed something to work with though, and Nothin Song exists just as an excuse to have a song.
Though this fits pretty nicely with what Alice was known for at the time, the lyrics are the definition of filler, in more ways than one. While most people would call filler material just a bunch of lackluster lines thrown together, Alice seems to be acknowledging that they don’t have any ideas on this song, with the title being an homage to their boredom and writer’s block in the studio. The instrumentation is anything but phoned in though, as Jerry Cantrell creates different licks that almost reach Tony Iommi levels of heavy in some spots.
For all of the dark stuff underneath, this song is actually fairly funny, talking about how this song sticks to you like peanut butter on your brain. These two tones don’t sound like they should work in the slightest, but it’s a great change of pace during the halfway point of the album. The whole mindset behind this record is already fairly sad, so why not have something a little more lighthearted for a few minutes?
