10 Rock Songs That Were Written By Accident
2. Yesterday - The Beatles
Before most of the Beatles were out of their 20’s, they had already written enough love songs to keep the world satisfied for the rest of time. In between the puppy love songs that they were known for in their early days, the back half of the ‘60s would give way to a more intense form of affection, talking about the healing power of it in All You Need is Love and The End. Of all the love songs that Lennon and McCartney wrote together, Yesterday is where everything changed for Paul.
As Paul was putting the track together though, he was convinced that the whole thing was a fluke. Instead of sitting down to flesh out a tune, Macca got the idea for this song while he was sleeping, waking up in the middle of the night and getting to the piano so he could find where the chords were. When he was working on it though, he kept telling himself that it was probably just an old jazz tune that he remembered from his days when his father played, only to realize that he hit on something all his own.
Crafting a new song from the ground up, Paul used Scrambled Eggs as the placeholder words before Yesterday fell into his head, which turned this song into a sad lament about love lost and what this poor sap could have done to prevent the love of his life from walking out the door. Though the Beatles had reservations about recording it because of their rock credentials, this was about more than just rock. This was a song that was meant for the whole world.
