10 Rock Songs Too Weird To Get Big
5. Satisfaction - Devo
The idea of rock and roll riff probably would look a lot differently without Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. As far as the harsher side of rock is concerned, Keith Richards' amazing guitar riff set a new standard of menace in rock, combining the right amount of blues flair and street punk attitude to reach a new audience of disenfranchised teenagers. So naturally it should be remade by the guys who look like cyborgs trying to be human.
Once the new wave started to get underway, the sound of Devo was certainly unique for its time, with Mark Mothersbaugh having his own warped vision of stripping down the trappings of rock and roll. And nowhere is that deconstruction more evident than on Satisfaction, where he plays this Stones classic absolutely stiff, almost like the inflection in his voice is being pumped out in code to the rest of the music.
There's probably a certain stripe of rock fan who would actually hate a cover like this, but it's still a refreshing take on the classic song that we know and love. Then again, it's understandable why this didn't actually catch on, as Devo would take a little while before breaking the mass market with Whip It. While it's hard to say whether the Glimmer Twins approve of something like this, the idea of tearing down the old guard to create something entirely different is probably the most rock and roll thing you could have done with this.
