10 Rock Songs Too Weird To Get Big
6. Bip Bop - Paul McCartney and Wings
There's no real rule book on where to go after you've left the biggest band in the world. After the Beatles' bitter break up, every one of the Fab Four seemed to go their own separate direction, each with varying degrees of success. Though John Lennon managed to reach the mass public again on Imagine, it was a bit of a rough ride once Paul McCartney first got Wings going.
On their first album Wild Life, it's clear that McCartney was still starting to get a feel for what this band even was, with most of the songs being nothing more than meandering jams that don't really go anywhere. Although you can hear McCartney reaching for some newer influences on the title track and even reconciling with Lennon on Dear Friend, Bip Bop is probably one of the most unnecessary tracks in the McCartney discography.
Despite having one of the catchiest pieces of music on the album, McCartney is still not really in his element here, as he seems to be making up the words by scat singing as he goes along. This is a far cry from the bop music of jazz, being closer to some avant garde pop than Maybe I'm Amazed Part 2. Even though Band on the Run was right around the corner, these were the baby steps that we really didn't need to see.
