10 Rock Songs With Horrible Backstories
6. We Die Young - Alice in Chains
Most fans could have probably guessed a song by Alice in Chains would have appeared on here sooner or later. Since Layne Staley's tragic tale of drug addiction has been documented in the album Dirt, a handful of tracks from that record alone could have been contenders. If you thought that the darkness crept in on their second album, they kicked off their career in the same way on We Die Young.
Being the first song on their debut record Facelift, the sound of the record is enough to put you on edge, with Jerry Cantrell playing a riff that would have made Tony Iommi proud. When it came time to actually go through the lyrics, Cantrell was actually inspired by the real life horror stories going on with kids in the Seattle area. As he walked the streets of Seattle, he noticed that a lot of kids were carrying beepers, which were actually being used to deal drugs to underage junkies.
So We Die Young is about the very real problem of kids getting their hands on narcotics and fading away before they even knew what hit them. The video is actually pretty real too, showing the band as these kids being thrown down the river in plastic bags. For a group that always sang about their drug habits, this is one of the crunchiest anti drug songs that you will ever hear.
