10 Rock Songs With Weird Instruments
4. Disgustipated - Tool
For any metal fan in the 90's, Tool's debut release Undertow still stands as one of the most pummeling records to ever be released. Across just 10 tracks, the band unleashed an overwhelming amount of fury with guitars that hit like a battering ram.
On the other hand, what many fans don't pick up is what happens towards the end of the record on the track "Disgustipated." While the initial songs definitely had an edge to them, the band took it one step further by bringing actual firearms into the equation. Conducted more as an avant garde experiment than actual musical composition, the band took the studio time to destroy a piano using one of Maynard James Keenan's assault rifles. Along with the audio of shooting a piano, there is also a credit on the album for someone playing sledgehammer, as it was used to demolish the remains of the instrument.
After the destruction, Keenan saw the inner workings and was genuinely upset that he had defiled such a beautiful instrument for the sake of art. However, the near chaotic soundscape that the band created in dissecting a piano made for fantastic ambience that contributed to the warped vibe of the record.
