10 Rock Stars That Almost Died On The Road
7. Eddie Vedder - Pearl Jam
The grunge scene was not necessarily known for having the larger than life frontman all that often. The era of David Lee Roth was done away with during the '90s, and people like Kurt Cobain were more musically inclined and looking to tear you to shreds with songs that tapped into some inner pain. Eddie Vedder was no different, but a funny thing happened once the music got inside of him.
Being a camping veteran for years before coming up to Seattle, Eddie had a thing for climbing and would often scale the rafters of whichever club the band would be playing. It might have seemed like a punk rock move in the moment, but it also got a lot more dangerous once they graduated to the festival circuit, as Eddie took his mic and started to climb that scaffolding most of the time, especially during the middle of the song Alive where he would hang from the rafters for most of Mike McCready's solo.
To his credit though, Eddie has said that the music was what helped him climb those heights, saying that he would barely have enough strength to manage it if there was silence. That didn't stop him from trying to outdo himself either, like when he scaled a camera operator before diving into the crowd and getting a bunch of deep scratches on his back. This might have been about the spirit of rock and roll, but losing another singer from stunts like this would have probably been more than the former members of Mother Love Bone could have taken.
