10 Rockers That Went Pop (And Nailed It)

6. There Is Nothing Left to Lose - Foo Fighters

It took a long time for the Foo Fighters to really find their feet once they started hitting the big time. Since Dave Grohl already had everyone's eyes on his band the minute that they broke out, a lot of the band's birthing pains happened in public, leaving the main band as a trio for the album There is Nothing Left To Lose. It may have been a rough few years, but the sound of this album is the Foos' finally finding a place to rest.

Even though the majority of this album has the same tropes that you would find on your typical Foo Fighters album, there's a much greater attention to melody this time around, with Dave saying that he was listening to a lot of '70s AM radio to get inspiration for the tracks. Compared to the smack in the face of a song like Stacked Actors kicking everything off, there's a surprising amount of beauty on the rest of the record, like the silly love song structure of a song like Generator until eventually dropping you into an almost Beatles like atmosphere on Next Year and Ain't It the Life.

The initial crunch that you get from a Foo Fighters record is still here, but songs like Gimme Stitches and Aurora aren't coming from a place of pain anymore. These guys had weathered through the storm of losing one band member after another, and this is the sound of finally being able to cut to the chase and play some of the best songs you can.
