10 Scottish Bands You Need To Listen To
5. Glasvegas
No points for guessing which part of Scotland this indie rock quartet hails from. And if their name somehow isn't enough, then singer James Allan's broad Glaswegian accent will help. It's Glasgow, Glasvegas are from Glasgow.
After the initial line-up was formed in 2003 by Allan and his cousin Rab Allan on guitar, Glasvegas began to get noticed in 2007 following years of releasing independent singles and performing small gigs as supporting acts, with NME voting their single 'Daddy's Gone' the second best of that year.
Not long after, they released their self-titled debut album to massive critical acclaim in 2008. Containing tracks 'Geraldine', 'Flowers And Football Tops', and 'Go Square Go', the album gained providence in the UK, North America, and Sweden.
Although their music is rather minimalist in style, comprised of simple drum beats and repeated riffs, the band made their mark with their highly emotive lyrics that are made all the more meaningful with Allan's raw and passionate vocals.
Over a decade later, Glasvegas have released two further studio albums alongside a collection of demos titled Hometapes in 2018. Although the band hasn't managed to re-capture the popularity of their debut album, they still haven't lost their distinctive sound.
