10 Sellout Albums That Don't Suck
4. Let's Dance - David Bowie
Saying that David Bowie ever really sold out by changing genres is borderline nonsensical at this point. Being the multi genre chameleon that we all know him for, the Thin White Duke was always looking to expand his sound palette with new and interesting ideas up until the very end. Then again, Let's Dance marks a clear shift into poppier territory from one of the leaders of the counterculture.
If you were here for straight pop tunes though, you won't find many on this record, with Modern Love and Let's Dance functioning as pop odysseys rather than bite sized singles. Looking to work with newer people, Bowie's drafting of blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan on the title track was a stroke of genius, along with bringing in Nile Rogers to add his signature funk and jazzier soundscapes into the mix.
Are the songs still products of the time? Oh hell yes...even Bowie would have probably told you that. This isn't meant to be looked at as strictly a time capsule though. These are songs that have aged like fine wine in the pop world, even inspiring later dance-centric tracks down the line. Even if Bowie may have been wearing a neon colored costume for this era, he was still far ahead of the curve that most of us realized.
