8. Feel It Still - Portugal The Man (2017)
When Portugal The Man dropped Feel It Still back in 2017, it seemed to seep into every aspect of society. If it wasn't on our radio stations, or Spotify daily mixes, it was on every other advert on YouTube, or TV. It sounded both contemporary and fresh, while simultaneously having the feeling of a well-worn classic. Everyone was sure they'd heard the track years before, but it was hard to pin down where.
There's good reason for you thinking you'd heard the number before. The group made no pretence about utilising a well known melody from the Marvelettes' 1961 hit Please Mr. Postman; a track covered countless times throughout the '60s, by a whole swath of groups, including the Beatles.
In this case it was handled with both respect and skill. Portugal the Man, were pretty open about where they got the melody and vocal hook from. If you're going to borrow from someone else, borrow from the best...
