10 Shameless Rock Ripoffs That Are Great

5. Shakermaker - Oasis (1994)

Noel Gallagher has always been forthcoming about his tendency to borrow from the best. He's leaned on the riffs of Marc Bolan, and taken chord progressions from the Beatles. But perhaps is most baller move, was lifting the opening lyrics from a Coca Cola advert; lacing in some references to being a total lad, and slapping on some distorted guitar licks.

At the time, the lads from Oasis were still playing gigs at the now infamous Boardwalk club in Manchester; there was little hope of scoring a record deal, and the only motivation was playing live. Cover songs had become tedious for the group, but when it came to writing 'original material' they weren't precious about borrowing from others.

Gallagher admitted he was pulling from anywhere, including the TV. But it wasn't like he just lifted a few lyrics, changed them around, and altered the rhythm; he simply took the existing lyrics, including the melody, and rolled with it.

Only the Gallagher brothers could get away with a move like that, and still have the track considered an all time classic. Although they eventually changed the lyrics due to legal action, the melody is identical.

Before engrossing myself in the written word, I spent several years in the TV and film industry. During this time I became proficient at picking things up, moving things and putting things down again.
