10 Shameless Rock Ripoffs That Are Great
3. Sun King - The Beatles (1969)
You could very easily make the argument that the Beatles are the single most influential group of all time. They brought psychedelic rock to the masses; preempted metal by several years; laid the groundwork for punk; spelled out the trajectory for every big rock group to follow; and pretty much changed the face of modern music.
But that doesn't mean they were above borrowing from others. Lennon famously lifted Come Together from a Chuck Berry number, slapping it as the opening track to Abbey Road. And, that wasn't the only track that was significantly influenced by another huge group at the time.
Long before Rumours, and the arrival of Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac had been a blues group, fronted by Peter Green. In 1968 they released the instrumental Albatross. The track was huge, and even the Beatles couldn't resist the silky smooth nature of it.
When it came to recording for Abbey Road, the group decided to mimic the Mac song, in order to get a vibe going for the sessions. The resulting track feels so similar to Albatross, it's a wonder M&S haven't used it to sell sensual-looking food yet.
