10 Most Shocking MTV Awards Moments

5. Britney Spears Gives Her Comeback Performance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWGEwmaE55U A sad fact is that it's not always just the good performances which stick in our memories. By the MTV Video Music Awards 2007, Britney Spears was as famous for her personal life as she was for her music. She'd made trips in and out of rehab, lost custody of her children and, at the height of her personal problems, was photographed shaving her head and beating a paparazzi photographer's car with an umbrella. Team Britney had decided that year's VMAs in Las Vegas would be the perfect opportunity for Britney to make her musical comeback. She was about to release her fifth album Blackout (which, incidentally, is regarded by most critics as her best) and so she took to the stage to perform the lead single from the album Gimme More. Far from being the comeback everybody was hoping for, though, the performance was heavily criticised for a number of reasons. Britney seemed dazed and disoriented throughout the number and the choreography was questionable, meanwhile Britney's lip-syncing gave the impression she wasn't overly familiar with the song she was promoting. While it seemed to most people that Britney Spears quite simply wasn't ready for a musical comeback, one fan who sprung to Britney's defense after the 2007 VMAs was Chris Crocker, whose "Leave Britney Alone" video became one of the most famous YouTube clips of all time.
