6. The Dandy Warhols Nietzsche
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEwoYK1kQR0 This is the final part of the incredible trilogy of songs that opens their finest album, Thirteen Tales From an Urban Bohemia. Godless shimmers into life and, with its triumphant horns, stands as one of the most perfect album openers of this millennium. It's followed by Mohammed, a ruddy mysterious jam with all the heady musk of a room thick with incense. But though impressive, this was just a move to clear the air and prepare you for the onslaught of Nietzsche. To get the full effect, the trilogy must be listened to in sequence. However, even as a standalone song, Nietzsche is incredible. With just three basic chords and deceptively simple incanted lyrics (I want a god that stays dead/Not plays dead), The Dandy Warhols somehow managed to craft a beast potent enough to make walls crumble. The surges of drenched guitar that rise towards the end are a reminder that just because your head is bowed, it doesn't always mean you're gazing at your shoes. Sometimes, you're just feeling the sheer power of the music you've unleashed. Amidst the hushed vocals and guitar geekery, it's easy to forget that shoegaze can seriously rock when it wants to.
