10 Song Guide To Neil Peart's Awesomeness
2. One Little Victory
As the 90's came to a close, Neil was going through a personal hell. Within the span of a year, Neil's daughter was tragically killed in a car accident and his wife would pass away after a battle with cancer. To get away from his troubles, Neil got on his motorcycle and proceeded to drive all across North America to sort out his personal demons.
Upon his return, Lee and Lifeson were skeptical as to whether Neil would even want to play music again. After finding some stability, Neil felt that the time was right for him to return to making music. Out of that awful few years came the album Vapor Trails, with lyrics that dealt with the trauma Neil had dealt with over those horrible years.
There are plenty of excellent songs to be found on this record, but "One Little Victory" kicks down the door with an intense drumbeat and Neil's great statement of defiance as he writes about his spirit breaking free from those demons. When things looked their most dire, Neil still stepped forward with conviction on this track and saved the band from falling apart. Long may that spirit fly!
