10 Song Guide To Neil Peart's Awesomeness
1. Caravan
With almost 40 years of pure prog rock badassery under their belt, the band finally decided to tackle their first full-fledged concept record with Clockwork Angels. This was an incredibly ambitious concept for Neil to tackle, with lyrics revolving around a steampunk future and one man's quest to find his bliss. Neil was so proud of this concept that he eventually worked to turn his story into a novel.
"Caravan" opens the record like a gargantuan motorcar rolling into the station in front of you. As the opening bass strains set up the scene, the song explodes when the full band finally kicks in. From the start of the record, Neil showed he had certainly never lost his touch, throwing drum accents left and right for good measure.
As the story begins, the attitude of the character is that of determination, even if the path in front of him is daunting. The line "in a world where I feel so small, I can't stop thinking big" launches us into the story while also being a battle cry for anyone with seemingly impossible tasks in their lives.
Now that Neil is no longer with us, this is a great sentiment to leave us with. RIP Neil, and never stop thinking big.
