10 Song Meanings EVERYONE Gets Wrong
6. Swimming Pools - Kendrick Lamar
Since the beginning of hip hop, the world has not soured on the drinking song. Even outside of the realms of hip hop, almost every single genre of music that populates the charts has dipped their toes into tunes about getting messed up on the weekend and having a good time. Though Kendrick Lamar was more than welcome to throw his hat in the ring, a lot of people probably weren't expecting a dissection quite like this.
For the most part, Swimming Pools could be listened to as a drinking song and nothing else, with Kendrick's main hook line talking about having a pool full of liquor and diving in. Once you get in tune with what the rest of the song is doing though, this is actually advocating for the exact opposite reaction.
Seeing how Good Kid Maad City is all about Kendrick's upbringing, this is a song dissecting the nature of alcoholism and how hard it can hit you when you decide to go that one step too far.
Hell, even in the second verse, Kendrick switches up his vocal inflections to provide the voice of his conscience and talk himself down from going to far over the edge. Even though you can definitely knock a few back to this song, the monotonous intoning of "DRINK" just speaks to the ongoing cycle of getting up only to drink again.
