10 Songs About How The Music Business Sucks

6. The Rock Show - Blink-182

As the pop punk explosion was happening all over again, it looked like Blink-182 were about to steal the crown that Green Day had left up there back in the Dookie days. Off the heels of Enema of the State, these three dudes from San Diego had already gotten some of their biggest hits, and it looked like Take Off Your Pants and Jacket was poised to be even better. Then again, the band probably wouldn't have one of their biggest hits if they had been able to release the record their way.

After turning in the final album, Blink actually had the record sent back to them by their higher ups, saying that there weren't any real breakout singles on the album. Since this was meant to be a more thoughtful take of what the band was known for, Mark Hoppus was not exactly happy to come back into the studio to work and channeled all of that passive aggression into the next song.

Trying to write one of the most pop-friendly pieces of trash that he could think of, Mark came up with the Rock Show, which had dead simple lyrics about a girl he met at a concert and fell in love with. The higher ups did not really get the joke though, rushing it out as the band's next single and turning it into a staple of the record in the next few years. You can try your best to play tricks on your boss, but there's no guarantee that they will actually take the hint.
