9. Retro (Rough)
Every so often, Gambino likes to go back to old tracks and breathe new life into them on a later release. This was the case with the tracks from Guava Island, but when putting together Kauai, Glover went even further back to one of his early mixtapes. 2008's Sick Boi featured the track Love Is Crazy, which served as the inspiration for Retro (Rough).
The original track featured a verse by the actor Eugene Cordero (Tacoma PD, The Good Place) who was a part of the same comedy group as Donald at the time. Both Donald and Cordero's verses are pretty bad, but the hook and beat were too good to be left alone.
Despite being billed as a 'rough' cut, the track is one of the highlights on the EP. The song ends as if it's still a work in progress, hence the moniker, so maybe Glover wants to revisit the track a third time? Either way, his dulcet tones in the hook are impossible to get out of your head and the reworked lyrics really show the maturity he has learned as an artist since Love Is Crazy.
