10 Songs By Childish Gambino You've Been Sleeping On
4. We Ain’t Them
Another track hidden away in the large collection of Childish Gambino mixtapes, We Ain't Them deserves way more attention than it received.
The Royalty mixtape was another free release, featuring an eclectic mix of samples from Kavinsky's Nightcall to Toxic by Britney Spears. Opening track, We Ain't Them sees Glover team up with regular companion Ludwig Goransson and captures everything listeners loved about the Camp era. Yet while the vocals are the regular swagger filled rhymes listeners had grown to expect, the instrumental felt much more like what was to come.
The song acts as a perfect bridge between Camp and Because the Internet. Hidden amongst the song's beat is an unassuming piano line that would morph into III. Life: The Biggest Troll. Not only that, the violin section from Les features heavily in the mid-section of We Ain't Them.
Royalty may not have been Gambino's best release, but that just allows this track to shine even more. Due to the different sounds on the mixtape, it's worth wondering if this track was actually written for Camp but didn't make the cut.
