10 Songs By Childish Gambino You've Been Sleeping On
3. II. Zealots Of Stockholm [Free Information]
It's difficult to refer to anything on Because the Internet as underrated. The fan favourite album dished out track after track of brilliance, but some of the stranger tracks fell to the wayside. It's not as if any of those songs are bad, but it's difficult to compete with the mainstream sucess the singles had.
One of the most overlooked tracks on the album is Zealots of Stockholm. It's a mostly relaxed vibe, but still packs a punch with that middle, deep bass section. It's an odd structure, something he would revisit on Me and Your Mama, but it's not the instrumental that makes this song great.
There are plenty of examples of Glover's intelligence in his lyrics, yet he takes things to another level entirely on this track. Zealots represents the death of The Boy's father and how he chose to deal with it. It's a dark tale of a spiral into deep depression and self-destruction. By the end, the story's protagonist is left questioning his faith and details the use of marijuana as a coping mechanism.
