5. All Nightmare Long - Metallica

Vampiric-lyric: "'Cause we hunt you down without mercy, hunt you down all nightmare long" Metallica's 2008 album Death Magnetic still divides people to this day; are the songs complex
enough to justify fans of the older stuff getting into them? Is the lyric on Broken, Beat & Scarred of "What don' kill ya, makes ya mo' strong!" actually self-aware good fun, or godawful madness spawned from ageing rockstars trying to
coral the masses? Regardless of that, All Nightmare Long remains the second most intense track on the album along with the ferocious My Apocalypse - itself a raging composition with a mid-point breakdown riff that descends into a very simplistic-yet-effectively anarchic solo from Kirk Hammett. Being that Death Magnetic had the world watching following the extremely divisive St. Anger, it's tracks like Nightmare that have the requisite gut-punch that only an instant-onslaught of guitars can bring. The intro to this track almost single-handedly resurrected Metallica's credibility when we switch from chords to that unmistakeable chug, and that was before we got to the insanely fun wah-mageddon solo.
