10 Songs Everyone Misunderstood As Kids
7. Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me
Def Leppard's lyrical content has never been for the more innocent side of rock and roll. From their beginnings to their late-era triumphs, the band have always been known to add a little (or a lot) of sexual euphemisms in their lyrics. Even though its become an anthem, this song was one we should have seen right through when we first heard it.
For anyone who grew up as a naive kid, the sugar in this song seemed to be nothing more than the kind your parents sprinkle into their coffee. On the other hand, this song was most likely one of the first songs from everyone's youth that they realized was about sex. With the theme "love is like a bomb," the entire facade of a lump of sugar is paper thin from the start. Once you get past the initial shock factor, it's not a stretch to figure out what the guys are talking about when they refer to peaches and cream.
That being said, there's nothing necessarily wrong with a song like this that adds a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor to the rock lyric. The other words may not make a lot of sense, but there's no disputing the meaning of what that "sugar" actually is.
