10 Songs Everyone Misunderstood As Kids

6. Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark

Death Cab For Cutie's sound seems like the furthest thing from threatening. From their more laid-back instrumentation to the comforting voice of Ben Gibbard, the band have garnered a reputation for creating a very chill version of indie rock. At the same time, the band's trademark ballad is not necessarily the most optimistic of love songs.

On first listen, "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" seems like a cute little song, with the singer talking about going to the ends of the Earth to be with his love. These lovers seem like a modern day Romeo and Juliet...but maybe a bit too similar in some other places.

The chorus actually talks about the lovers' embrace of death and how if one of them dies, the other will be sure to die along with them. It's unclear what their fate is past mortality, but Gibbard suggests that they probably won't go to Heaven or Hell, but rather fade away intertwined with each other. Pretty heavy existentialism to be found in what sounds like a song you would hear at the coffeehouse down the street. From a sonic point of view, "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" is a great case of not judging a song just on its sound.
