10 Songs Rock Bands Refuse To Play Live
6. Red Hot Chili Peppers – ‘Love Rollercoaster’
For some fans, 'Love Rollercoaster' was their first introduction to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was covered by the Chili Peppers in 1996, around the time they released their album 'One Hot Minute', with it appearing on the soundtrack for the animated feature film Beavis and Butt-head Do America. The song is played early on in the movie too, when Beavis and Butt-head arrive in Las Vegas.
The song was originally written and performed by American funk/R&B band Ohio Players, but the Chili’s went for rap-based verses and kazoos on their version. An animated music video was made for the song, featuring Beavis, Butt-head and the band riding an amusement park roller coaster, intercut with scenes from the film.
The band has never performed the song live. It's rumoured to have never had a live outing as it was recorded only due to obligations to have a song on the soundtrack at the time; recorded out of necessity than desire. The Peppers barely acknowledge that the song even exists, with it being a Dave Navarro era recording, an era they want to forget. The 'One Hot Minute' album and companioning tour turned out to be one of the more underwhelming times in the band's history.
During a Reddit AMA session, a fan asked drummer Chad Smith about why that period has mostly been forgotten when it comes to live sets.
"We don't really feel connected to that record anymore. No special reason, not to say we would never play those songs but we don't feel that emotionally connected to that music right now."
