10 Songs Rock Bands Refuse To Play Live
5. Green Day – ‘Panic Song’
Following 'Dookie', the album that made them mainstream stars, Green Day channelled their hurt and anger into their follow-up 'Insomniac'. 'Panic Song' is the 8th song on 'Insomniac', written by Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt. Mike has a long bass intro in it which fits well with the theme of the song, given that it’s centred on panic attacks and the lyrics describing what someone feels when they’re caught in one.
It’s a fan favourite but so far, it’s only been played live once, in France, 2012. In an Instagram exchange, a commenter asked why Green Day don’t play 'Panic Song' live with Billie's response being that “it’s too hard, and I’m too lazy."
Mike Dirnt has suffered from carpal tunnel, having had surgery to correct the damage caused by years of running his handup and down the fret board so it would be a major pain in the wrist for Mike to play 'Panic Song' live.
