5. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjLaj2GROjU Try as I did, I simply couldn't find the solo version of this song that Lindsey Buckingham performed on a banjo on Youtube. Trust me, though, it was unbelievable. In the meantime, the classic clip above from the aftermath of the release of Rumours will have to do as an example of how perfect this song is live. Unborn foetuses probably know the backstory to Rumours by now-stories of heartbreak, desperation and bitter recriminations set to harmonised power-pop. When viewed live, Go Your Own Way exemplifies just how astonishing it is that this record was ever cut. Buckingham's voice frequently cracks and is thick with anguish, while the subject of the lyric stands next to him, barely glancing in his direction but delivering a faultless backing vocal that sweetens the bitter pill the listener is being urged to swallow. A song as perfect as Go Your Own Way is hard to improve upon. Add two doomed lovers singing with their backs to each other, and some outstanding drumming by the underrated Mick Fleetwood, and you can see that it's hard, but not impossible.
