10 Songs That Are Darker Than You Realize

3. Semi Charmed Life - Third Eye Blind

The only way to describe Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind nowadays is if you made the entire '90s music scene into one song. From the sing song rapping style of Stephen Jenkins on the verses to the massive amount of hooks on every single verse, the song feels like a ray of sunshine right out of the gate. So is this the kind of throwback that's supposed to relive our days as a carefree kid in middle school? Afraid not kids...you get meth instead.

Compared to the other songs on this list, this might be one of the darkest songs to ever cross over into the mainstream, with every one of Jenkins' lines being sung from the perspective of a junkie feigning for a kick of something. In fact, the entire chorus doesn't read as a care-free line so much as it sounds like a cry for help, as this man is trying everything he can to change his ways.

Then again, that kind of weird juxtaposition was just crazy enough to work, with Jenkins doubling down on the darker themes with Jumper, which was about someone threatening to commit suicide. Even though the hooks on this track are as sunny as they come, this is pretty much the exact moment when a dream starts to slowly turn into a nightmare.
