10 Songs That Are Impossible To Understand

9. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix

But hey, the '90s weren't the only time to be working on lyrics that were lacking in a bit of logic. Just a few years prior, the entire psychedelic generation had made their bread and butter out of lyric sheets that had more to do with the sounds and feelings of words that their actual meaning. Ladies and gentlemen...may your humble author present the '90s upside down...Purple Haze.

It almost feels wrong putting an icon like Jimi Hendrix in this position though, given that he has an ear for lyrics and even covered one of Bob Dylan's greatest works in All Along the Watchtower. However, when you get down to the nitty gritty behind Purple Haze, it's abundantly clear that this is not about a straightforward story of love. While you can technically qualify this as a love song by singling out the girl who has put a spell on Hendrix, the man himself has offered a different method.

As he tells it, Hendrix thought of the concept for the song about a dream that he had where he was walking under the sea and seeing this girl through his daze. Given that this was the '60s though, you can infer the cosmic origins of the song on your own, like the fact that Purple Haze was also the popular name for a pill form of LSD. Drugs might be a detriment to rock and rollers, but they do manage to fuel the odd song every now and again.
