10 Songs That Are Impossible To Understand
8. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
The entire genre of grunge never seemed to cater that much to the in depth side of lyrics. As much as acts like Pearl Jam had deeper meanings in some of their songs, it's hard to be treated like the kings of lyrical jewels when Kurt Cobain, the leader of your genre, wrote tracks that were borderline nonsense. Though Soundgarden stood out as having something to say on a lot of their work, you will not really be seeing that here on Black Hole Sun.
While this may have been the track that brought Soundgarden to the top of the charts for the first time, Chris Cornell has always been upfront that the origins of these lyrics don't really mean a damn thing. Going across a snake lying in Cornell's eyes, it's obvious that there are some deep-seated metaphors in here that don't really lead to anywhere in particular.
During the actual writing process, Cornell had said that he didn't really have any set meaning for any of the words before laying them down, instead going for their imagery and likening it to painting with words. For as many classics have been made out of throwing together different phrases, this kind of word painting would be on par with Jackson Pollack if made flesh.
