10 Songs That Are Impossible To Understand
6. This Is a Call - Foo Fighters
The fact that the Foo Fighters even managed to come into existence after Kurt Cobain's death is honestly a miracle. After going through one of the hardest things a musician would ever go through, the debut of Dave Grohl's little band that could managed to go from a fun side project to one of the biggest names in modern music. They didn't really get there by being the Bob Dylan of the '90s though.
Going into the recording for the Foos' first album, most of the lyrics weren't really supposed to make any sense by Dave's own admission, instead being more of a free flowing word association game than anything. While people might be able to pick on some messages on songs like I'll Stick Around, This is a Call really acts as a good example of the entire album, as Grohl waxes poetic about magic markers, balloons, and having an insistence to call out something that's happening.
As delectable as the riffs are, these lyric sheets aren't really enough to make it to first drafts, with Kurt Cobain himself probably laughing them out of the room. We did get a bit of a change of pace though on the next record, where Grohl started writing songs that could tug at your heartstrings like My Hero and Everlong. For a first outing though, this is still about as amateur hour as it gets.
