10 Songs That Are Impossible To Understand
3. Drain You - Nirvana
The entire era of alternative rock has a bit of contention in regards to straightforward lyrics. While there is definitely some nuance going on out there if you look for it (just listen to any of the Smiths' records), the crux of what actually becomes popular is usually saved for stuff that doesn't need a healthy dose of brain power to comprehend. Hell, if you're not careful, even the greatest in the genre can squeak by on meaningless lyrics.
As much as Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit might seem like a random barrage of topics from one line to the next, you could at least see what Kurt Cobain was going for, looking to capture the cultural zeitgeist and apathy in one go. When it comes to Drain You, there's no real idea of why the concept of reproduction has to function into the equation. Even though this is on brand given the baby on the cover of the album, it gets a little strange when Cobain tries to make a connection with baby talk and intimacy as if they are the same thing.
While you could make the argument that this is actually a love song at the end of the day, this kind of mind expanding art rock would fare a lot better on In Utero just a little while later. Not bad by any stretch...but just try to shoot for something that we don't have to decipher next time.
