10 Songs That Are Meant To Confuse You

6. Frame By Frame - King Crimson

Most of the building blocks of weird rock seemed to be set in motion by King Crimson. Aside from their mantle as kings of the prog rock realm, there was a lot more going on in the mind of Robert Fripp than your traditional 9 part musical symphony. Though we were bound to get plenty of that, the headache that guitarists have while trying to play Frame by Frame is downright devilish.

Given that most prog rock fans have gotten used to shifting time signatures, Fripp decides to deviate from the formula by having two different time signatures being played by two guitarists at the exact same time. While one guitar plays the traditional guitar riff of the breakdown the normal way, Fripp's way of approaching the riff involves removing a bit every single time to make for a guitar sound that feels like it was recorded in a cavern.

Once you think you're at the point of peak confusion, it actually comes back around when the riff that keeps leaving out beats actually ends up falling in rhythm with the original riff all over again. As much fun as this is to play once you've got it down, by no means should you make this your first exposure to King Crimson. This is the kind of stuff you come to when you're looking for an advanced level of challenge.
