10 Songs That Are Meant To Confuse You
7. Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day
After writing American Idiot, Billie Joe Armstrong really had his work cut out for him when going into the production on Green Day's latest record. Since the opening track was going to be this loud and abrasive shot at the current political administration, how the hell were they going to come up with something that could manage to equal it? Though Jesus of Suburbia certainly set things up for something grandiose, it's a bit much for your average pop punk fan to take in at once.
Even before you press play on the song itself, the sheer length is enough to throw fans for a loop, clocking in at a little over 9 minutes. As the song unfolds though, there's never a moment where it starts to feel its length, instead using that colossal runtime to give you a bunch of pieces of songs that build up to a greater whole. Compared to the verse chorus structure, each one of these bits could have made for a great chorus on their own, only to work best when pressed together.
It also works great for the story structure, giving you a rapid fire look at our protagonist before showing him eventually leaving home for the big city. For as much as this would have worked as an album closer, this was the first showstopper that let you know that we were just getting things rolling.
