10 Songs That Changed Rock History

8. Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day

Any kid who grew up in the '00s probably has some of their childhood memories tied up in pop punk music. Admit it...everyone had that one pool party that they went to and could sing along to every word of Fat Lip by Sum 41 or All the Small Things by Blink 182. That doesn't put you in rock history though. You need to get a little more ambitious for something like that.

As far as Green Day songs go, a lot from American Idiot could have made this list, being one of the last great rock albums that felt like an event being captured in real time. If you want to know the true meaning behind the album's message though, you have to single out Jesus of Suburbia, which depicts a down and out loner who's looking for any means to escape his boring existence.

Yes, I know, this is probably the same Green Day trope that's in a thousand of their songs, but this one went the extra mile by adding everything and the kitchen sink into the production, from massive piano breakdowns to sudden switches that feel like they're playing 5 different songs at once. Say what you want to about Green Day selling out, but you aren't going to see someone like New Found Glory do something like this any time soon.
