10 Songs That Defined The '90s
7. One Sweet Day - Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men
Granted, not all of the '90s boom had to do with rock and roll. Throughout every single facet of '90s music, we had the titans of R&B making waves around the same time, with Whitney Houston setting the tone for the rest of the decade with her showstopping hit I Will Always Love You. That was just the opening shot though... One Sweet Day was the peak that will never be equaled.
Being one colossal collaboration between Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, we have on our hands here is soul music of the gods, with Carey harmonizing with the men's choir behind her like a chorus of angels. Like all '90s songs though, this does come back to something a lot more close to the chest than your average soul jam. Instead of the normal love songs of this genre, this is a mourning song, as everyone looks back on the people in their lives that they never got the chance to say goodbye to.
While the lyrics aren't necessarily on par with Bob Dylan or anything, the power is all in the delivery, with it being nearly impossible to listen to this song without holding back tears. Whereas most '90s acts were known to lean more on the somber side, this is practically a damn avalanche of emotion that every R&B act going forward have tried to match.
