10 Songs That Don't Mean What You Think

9. Every Breath You Take (The Police)

What You Think It Means: Like the lyrical poet he most definitely is, Sting romances listeners by crooning about how his "poor heart aches" for the girl in his life. There's an obsessive vibe to the words, admittedly, but it's all masked by a simple thumping beat that mimics a leisurely stroll on the beach with a lover or the human heart itself.

What It's Actually About: If any number of dewy-eyed young lovers knew that Sting was actually singing about a sick, twisted stalker who might just be a serial killer, they would've called the police never mind listening to the band of the same name.

The subject of this seemingly romantic song deals with the heavily controversial topic of sexual harassment, stalking behaviour and manipulation. It's creepy, in other words, and it's also no accident that Sting looked so angry and domineering in the tune's music video. That was totally intentional.

Remember this next time you hear 'Every Breath You Take' at a wedding or see lovebirds gently dancing to it on a night out.
